The Ehelepola Walawwa (the ancestral home of Ehelepola Adhikaram) on King Street, Kandy, which is more than 400 years old, was handed over to the Temple of the Sacred Tooth Relic after its renovation. The ‘Ehelepola Walawwa’ was renovated by the Urban Development Authority under the full supervision of the Department of Archeology with the labor of the Sri Lanka Navy which took nearly 3 years. His Excellency the President Gotabaya Rajapaksa visited the site yesterday (Jan. 06) to observe its current situation.

The restoration of this ancient building of historical value, have been done without damaging the ancient plan of the ‘Walawwa’ which existed in the early period. The building, which was used as a prison cell during the British colonial period and later a remand prison was taken over by the government in 2013 by a ‘Sannasa’ (an official document). This group of buildings has already been handed over to the Temple of the Sacred Tooth Relic by the Urban Development Authority on the instructions of His Excellency the President.

Ehelepola Maha Nilame’s family, namely Ehelepola Maha Nilame, Ehelepola Kumarihami, Madduma Bandara, Loku Bandara, and their baby daughter lived in this ‘Walawwa’ which belonged to Ehelepola a Chieftain. Until the fate of the Ehelepola dynasty was decided by a court decision of King Sri Wickrema Rajasinghe on May 17, 1814, this historic land provided shade for the Ehelepola dynasty and their friends.
