Hon D.S. Senanayake took a leading role to obtain Independence from the British in year 1948. Today his statue situated in mahamaluwa was garlanded with flowers in par with the commemoration of the 73rd Independence celebration.
A simple celebration was held remembering all the heroes who sacrificed their lives for the independence of their motherland. Hon Diyawadana Nilame, The Mayor of Kandy & District Secretary of Kandy was present at the occasion.
