The ancient WegamaRoyal Temple is famous as the temple where the Sacred Tooth Relic was protected during the British ruling towards the end of the Kandyan kingdom. As per folk tales, its believed that this cave temple was built by Queen HenkandaBisobandara of Gampola era. In year 1585 this was declared as a Raja MahaViharaya and was offered with paddy fields and land. The temple was built during the reign of King Rajasinghe the first who reigned during 1554 – 1593. The “Sal” tree in which the Tooth Relic was hidden during enemy attacks is still standing tall in front of the cave temple.
කන්ද උඩරට රාජධානියේ අවසන් භාගයේ බ්‍රිතාන්‍ය ආක්‍රමණයන්‍ හමුවේ, දළදා වහන්සේ තාවකාලිකව සඟවා තැබූ වූ ස්ථානයක් ලෙස ඓතිහාසික වෑගම රජමහා විහාරය ඉතිහාසයට එක් වී ඇත. ජනප්‍රවාද, පුරාවෘත වල සඳහන් පරිදි ගම්පොළ යුගයේ විසූ හෙණකඳ බිසෝ බණ්ඩාර දේවිය විසින් මෙය ලෙන් විහාරයක් ලෙස ඉදි කර ඇති බව ද කියවේ. අනතුරුව ක්‍රි.ව 1585 දී රජ මහා විහාරයක් බවට පත්කර, කුඹුරු පිටි ඉඩකඩම් පූජා කර විහාර මන්දිරයක් ලෙස පවත්වාගෙන ගොස් ඇති බවත්, පළමුවන රාජසිංහ රජ ක්‍රි.ව 1554 – 1593 අතර පාලන සමයට සමකාලීනව ඉදි වූවක් බවත් ඉතිහාසයයේ සඳහන් ය. එදා පරසතුරු ආක්‍රමණ හමුවේ දළදා වහන්සේ සඟවා තැබූවේ යැයි සඳහන් සපු ගස අදට ද විසල් රුක්ෂයක් සේ ලෙන් විහාරය ඉදිරිපස දක්නට ලැබෙයි.
